Actually the current 4WD system isn't quite as failsafe as you think. At
least in my 4WD there is a vacuum operated actuator that can loose it's
ability to work. Without it you can shift the transfer case and it feels
and sounds like it's in 4WD but it is not. Even 4WD low feels normal. It
just doesn't hop around corners anymore since it isn't truely engaged.

I do agree fully that less wiring is a positive thing. Since last week I
paid a $600 bill for detection of a short that took out my computer and
transmission converter lockup.
