Everyone should at least show up to court, plead not guilty, and wait for the
trial date.
Many times the cop will not show up. If he does, just let him get on the stand
for 15 or so minutes and read his testimony. Then plead not guilty without
testifying. (fifth amendment - no perjury)
The costs to have a judge, court bailiff, court recorder, prosecuting attorney,
etc. in court all add up to the county (or city) losing money (BIG TIME - the
$30 court fee is nowhere near the true costs). That takes away the revenue
generating piece of the equation. Public safety is not usually a concern, as
almost any ticket can be "fixed" with a lawyer - written up to "defective
equipment" to avoid the very trial I mentioned earlier.
If everyone protested their tickets, the cops might only ticket drunks and
really unsafe drivers, leaving our Sporty Trucks and 15 mph overs alone! ;)
