Doug,

Pinging: My 1999 Dak w/V6 pinged like mad...at least until DC came out with the flash upgrade. The flash supposedly retards the ignition by 4 degrees and changes the injection timing a wee bit. I couldn't stand the pinging any longer so I had the flash installed. Much, much better...and no noticeable power loss. I'm not sure if that TSB applies to the 98 model though.

Some have had success changing spark plugs...even going to a cooler range plug. Others have had success changing to a 180 degree thermostat. When I changed out my spark plugs, I found that #4 was the one pinging the worse.

Locking rear brakes: Years ago, I experienced this problem on one of my vehicles. It turned out that one of the rear axle seals was leaking. The gooey mixture of axle grease and brake dust made the brake shoes stick inside the drum. It wouldn't hurt to pull the drums and have a look.
