Roll pan question?

Ok, since the back of my 96 Dak got crunched, insurance has cut me a good,
repeat, gooooooood check. Since Dodge wants 512 bucks for the factory rear
bumper and I can't find one around here in good condition, I am thinking of a
roll pan. Now, my question(s). I know that the bed flexes a little, but
would it make any difference in the structure if I weld in a metal roll pan
from a company like Sir Micheals? Would it be better if I got a fiberglass
pan, sanded and painted to match and just bolt it on? I know neither one
would offer much rear protection in the event of another rear end collision,
but would one be better than the other? I know the pan will help in the 1/4
and acceleration areas, that rear bumper is heavy!!! A pan could save
probably 20 lbs. Thanks for the help.
