Probably has to do with the fact that the intake is much cooler and thus the
air charge is cooler.
The same can be demonstrated on a dyno. If you let the engine cool down all
the way then run it on the dyno you will see a higher HP output on the
initial run, usually, than on subsequent runs because the intake starts to
really heat up.
