Actually, the factory replaced (Dbl-Row) timing chain and tensioner are
still laying in the garage.
The easiest way to tell if the timing chain is making the noise is to grab a
broom stick, hold it to the timing cover (while the engine is running) and
hold the other end to your ear. This makes it VERY easy to find any type of
"clacking" noises (such as lifters, rockers, timing chains, etc.).
Running 1 Qt. of ATF (as a replacement to 1 Qt. of oil) works like a charm
as long as you don't run it for more than 100 miles. ATF lubricates but the
reason for using it is the very high detergent levels which can help clean
the internals of an engine as well. That stuff you buy in the stores
(Engine Flush) is basically solvent and has no lubrication properties at
all.

Subject: RE: DML: Pinging/clatter/ God only knows what else
Okay
I've been reading through this topic and saw a lot about the pinging, but I
was more interested in what is causing the clatter. I've got a 96 V6 (Which
is the same as the 97 & up) doing the same thing. Is there a nylon
tensioner for the timing chain that might be worn or something like that?
You should know that one Bernd, seeing how your timing chain is laying
around in your garage somewhere now. :) There is also an occasional
clatter sounds like it might be the lifters, I'll have to give the ATF trick
a try unless some one thinks in would be extremely bad.
