Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I had some questions about my '98
full-time system and even the service guys at a certain dealership said there
was no such thing in a Dakota... When I dragged the guy outside and showed him
my truck he was suitably embarrassed! --I don't go to that dealership anymore.

About the shift sequence/schedule, in '98 the shifter still had/has a 2wd
position. Dunno if they removed that position in '99 or '00 but it's no longer
there... Doesn't really matter --just a bit of trivia I guess.

I didn't think the NV242 had a 2WD mode. I thought the normal driving
position was always 4WD
full-time with usual shift option of 4WD part-time, Neutral, and 4WD
part-time-low. The problem is the salespeople don't know what I'm talking
about, which is scary.

Hmmmm. This doesn't sound quite right. I've been pricing the QC's lately
and
what I found is that the NV242 full-time case can be found with the 4.7L V8
and
an auto tranny... If you go with the 5.9L or a stick they will only offer
the
NV231 part-time case.

Keep in mind they have changed the shift options/schedule in that you won't
have a 2WD mode with the NV242 anymore. Normal driving position now is 4WD
full-time with usual shift option of 4WD part-time, Neutral, and 4WD
part-time-low.

I currently own a Jeep Cherokee, but have been thinking about buying a new
Dakota Quad Cab. I had hoped to buy one with the Full-Time 4wd Shifter (NV
242 transfer case) that was available on the 2000 Dakotas, only to be told
by salesmen that the new Dakotas don't come with that option. Can anyone
tell me if the Dakotas come with an equivalent transfer case? I'm looking
for something that locks the differential in the transfer case as did the NV
242. My understanding was that the NV 242 was the equivalent of the Jeep
Select-Trac full-time 4wd system, which I have been very happy with.
