Will,
I have never messed around with OD on my Dak when hauling stuff in the bed.
I have put around 1200+ pounds in the bed many many times over the 6+ years
I have had my truck with zero problems. True, the bed/rear end did sag a
bit, but drive-ability was not affected. When/If I upgrade my rear leaf
spring packs, they will be rated at 2000 pounds. I am pretty sure my Dakota
Sport came with the wimpy 1450 pound springs, compared to the 1800lb
optional ones. When I tow my dad's 3500+ pound 20ft boat I dont even mess
around with the OD. I do have a heavy duty transmission cooler and have my
tranny fluid/filter changed once a year. To this day, there have been no
tranny problems, hard shifts, engine revving during shifts, etc. Just
clicked 130,000 miles today. Hope this helps.
