Here we go off the beaten path again.

The 318 is a 5.2. A 5.2 (if it's truly a 5.2) when converted comes out to
be 317.304 which doesn't even round to 318. It rounds to 317. But suppose
it is a 318. If we convert the other way we come out with 5.212 liter
engine. So taking 75% of a 318 (if it is a 318) would get you to 238.5, but
converting 3.9 to cubic inches nets 237.978.
Pick your poison. To satisfy Bernd and co, we'll start at the basics like
he did. From the US side bore is 3.91 inches and the stroke is 3.31 inches.
3.91/2 = 1.955 inches, that's our radius, times itself = 3.822025 times 3.14
= 12.001158 times 3.31 (stroke) = 39.723832. That's the number of cubic
inches in one cyl. times 6 = 238.34299. That's rounded to 238.

Actually, I got 238.5.
The 3.9 is a 6cyl. 318.
318/8= 39.75
39.75*6= 238.5

Sounds like some weird math, right? It works, anyway.

It's 237.9 so 238 is correct. The multiplier is 61.

I was looking in my '95 Dakota FSM. It says the 3.9L V6's are 238 cubic
inches. I know it's not a big difference, but it just seems weird that
the FSM would have 238 and everyone calls it a 239 (including me).
Anyone have any idea who's right?

Later,
