Send Dad back to school. :-) Many times, more HP means better gas
mileage! Most mods to improve HP do so by removing some of the
inefficiencies in the engine and drivetrain. A side effect is that
the engine doesn't have to work as hard against those inefficiencies,
and thus, gas mileage goes up. My Dakota used to run 16.0 in the 1/4mi
and get about 18-19mpg on the highway. Now, about 70hp later, it runs
14.5s and gets 21mpg. A lot also depends on what type of driving you
do. For example, it is not uncommon for a V8 to get better gas mileage
than a V6 when towing or hauling a load. The V8 doesn't have to work
as hard, and uses less gas.
Do your mods, drive conservatively, then compare gas station
receipts with Dad. :-)
