Absolutely, you can put too much weight in the bed. Too much weight and
you lose weight on the front wheels, and that's A Bad Thing. I think
the "ideal" weight depends on a lot of factors - how much snow, your
tires, the truck's weight balance, etc.

300lbs with studs and you still had problems? What tire pressure, and
what kind of tires? IO had 140 in my 4x4 V8 last year and didn't have
much trouble. BTW, studs really only work on ice or VERY hard-packed
snow. On a fresh snowfall, they won't do much for you.
