You'd need one hell of a big electric gun to solder 4-6 GA wire. Maybe a
modified welder or plasma cuter??

You'll need three hands for this but it'll work.

Use a propane torch as your heat source instead of an electric gun.

Put the lug in vise with the open end pointing straight up.

Strip the wire back and put it into the lug.

With one hand heat the lug, keep it low so it doesn't burn the cable jacket.

With the other hand hold up the cable straight up, preferably with a glove
or something.

With the third hand feed "lots" of solder into the lug as it heats, until
the solder starts to overflow.

You'll have to hold the cable in position, as you want it, for at least a
minute or so until the assembly cools enough to set. It doesn't set in
seconds like 18 or 20 GA wire.

Subject: DML: Soldering Question

I have soldered many many items in my life, both with my Weller 'pencil'
style solder gun and with my Craftsman 'gun-trigger' style gun. The pencil
style is rated at 25 wattts while the gun-trigger style is rated at upto 200
watts(adjustable from 100-200watts); the pencil soldering gun I only use on
small jobs and thin wires and of course the beast I use on thick
wires/cables. How thick of wire can I effectively solder, one which will
product a quality solder?? I need to solder a 2 ring 'lugs'/terminals onto
4-6gauge stranded wire(truck's main battery cables, pos/neg)and just curious
how will it turn out? I will, of course, only be using the larger Craftsman
soldering gun. Any info, help, or suggestions are greatly appreciated as I
would like to get the new military style battery cable 'clamps' on this next
weekend. THANKS!!!
