That's cuz his truck has so much TQ that he'd rip the teeth right off the
sprocket(s) if it weren't for the tensioner! ;-P

Well...here's the answer after dragging it out of a few local Dodge techs
and
one service manager:

The Tensioner is a "Retrofit" to fix the premature chain "slop" that occurs.
It turns out that my V6 didn't have one in there either (build date 3/97)
but
was installed by a local shop (when I didn't have time to do it myself) with
the tensioner kit included in the replacement set. This explains the
presense
of the tensioner.
