Thanks for the advice. I called a transmission shop who verified
the symtoms. In fact when I called, he asked 'does it make the noise
in all but 4th gear?', which is exactly what I had heard myself. He
said the input shaft was going bad, probably from running low on oil.
Their rebuild cost is $1400.
Needless to say, I passed on the truck.
I am in the market for a cheapo work truck under $2000. If anyone has
any leads, please pass them my way. I am not particular and will entertain
any make or model. Obviously, I would prefer a Dodge ;-)

Phil, those transmissions were not overly strong. It sounds like it will
need replacing or an overhaul in the near future. A used one (if you can
find one) will run 750-1000 plus shipping.
