Auto Trans Questions

I am going to start saving up here and there and have my truck's tranny
worked on/rebuilt. Hopefully I can set enough a side, to have it worked on
around April-ish. So in the meantime, I am going to call around for
complete rebuild estimates, and just start knowing a bit more about auto
tranny's before I get ripped off. I know the A500s arent the best auto
transmissions(but it works just fine for me), and believe the rebuild prices
are $1000-$1500. Is this price in the ballpark range?

When I my truck in recently to have it analyzed, the mechanic took it out on
the road and said it is 'stack shifting'. He said it isnt shifting and
locking into the gears as tight as it should be, sometimes even revvs up too
high, and often goes into 2nd gear at 8mph! He said not all the time, but
enough to have him believe it is time for some tranny work. When I told him
the tranny has never been touched, he was shocked. His 95 Dakota 4x4 Club
Cab's auto tranny completely went out at 98,000 miles and needed a good
rebuild; mine is currently at 136,100 miles.

I assume in order for automatic transmissions to be rebuilt, they have to be
removed from the vehicle, is this right? Also, is it better to take my truck
into a larger national place, like AAMCO, or just find the one place I feel
the best about? What are typical warranties like after a tranny rebuild?

Are there any heavy duty upgrades I can ask for/look for, or any upgrades at
all for this transmission to help it perform better? Would this be a good
time to have a good daily driver performance shift kit installed? Thanks.
