I had the same noise on my 97 with the 3.92 sure grip. I took it to my
dealer under extended warranty and according to the bill of materials, they
replaced the entire rear end (ring & pinion, bearings, seals, etc). They
didn't tell me what the exact problem was, but the noise was gone when I
picked it up.
