Dakotas have a Front live axle, this means that the front differential is always spinning when you go down the road. this doesn't cause any wear or handling problems because it's designed to do this, it does provide for a little gas mileage detriment since that's just that much more that has to be spun all the time. You could put a locker in the front as long as it isn't locked all the time. If the locker was locked on dry pavement the front tires would fight each other on a corner due to the speed differential and then it would be a fight for who's the strongest (friction between the tires and the road or the locker/axles/and ujoints).
