know from where I was coming from...
I knew that ebay offered that service. I have never used it, but I looked
around at it today to see if it was something that might be worth pursuing.
I think it might very well be. I know I would feel better if my $500 was in
the hands of a third party right now.
To address your questions. It would be completely voluntary, a person could
order direct and save that fee if they wanted. I don't think that for most
(read small) transactions it would be necessary, but on larger ticket items
or with a new vendor it could be useful. I believe a fee would be assessed
the buyer and remitted along with payment for the purchase. It shouldn't
have to be a large fee, although I don't think anyone would do it for the
$2.50 that ebay charges (for the first $100). As far as returns &
guarantees - that is just as it is now, strictly between buyer & seller.
The escrow agent only serves to assure that you receive product before
payment is made, and that payment is earmarked for the seller upon the goods
being delivered. The exception to this is upon initial inspection. If the
product was not what was ordered, damaged, or otherwise not what you were
purchasing it would be returned immediately and your money remains with the
agent until you either receive the product you expected or canceled the
order.
Would there be enough volume? I don't know that. I would almost be fearful
that it could get too much for anyone to basically do it for a "service"
(read-cheap).
