After doing a little studying in the service manual, Andy is right in what
he says, not that I didn't believe you Andy, just verifying that we were all
on the same page.

That middle knob, the one with the "OFF" position. In the
1st detent position Recir Compressor may cycle Only air in passenger
compartment is passed
                                                                        through evaporator.

2nd detent A/C on Compressor may cycle Both air from outside as well as
passenger
                                                                        compartment is passed through evaporator.

3rd detent Bi-level Compressor may cycle Both air from outside as well as
passenger
                                                                        compartment is passed through evaporator.

4th detent Face Vent No compressor Fresh air from outside comes out the
face vents.

5th detent Feet Vent No compressor Fresh air from outside comes out the
feet vents.

6th detent Feet Vent Compressor may cycle Fresh air from outside comes out
the feet vents
                        Defrost and defrost vents.

7th detent Defrost Compressor may cycle Fresh air form outside comes out
the defrost
                                                                        vents.

In the first three detent positions the compressor will not engage if the
ambient temperature is below 30ºF.

In any of the compressor cycle positions, if the compressor cycles more than
ten times a minute, you have a low-refrigerant condition and should get your
system checked and re-charged as soon as possible.

Because the bi-level is really A/C BUT it is not labeled as such (Jack
Hilton
posted that there is a TSB on this). The center knob controls which
accessories
are used - just the fan, fan and A/C, etc. and where the air is put out
(feet,
dash, both, defrost). The bottom knob only controls where the air goes
before
it pumps through the vents - set it to full cold, and no air goes through
the
heater core. Set it to full hot, all air goes through the heater core. Set
it
in the middle, half goes each way and is then brought back together.
