I got this from the MML today and it's pretty interesting especially
considering the source!
Some of what's in here I had read in an earlier edition of Forbes
magazine. I'll send it next.

There's a pretty interesting article on "where the money went" on the
Detroit News web site today:
http://www.detnews.com/2001/autos/0103/22/a01-202571.htm
One of the things it notes is the big drop in sales on some of the most
profitable vehicles, which helps explain how things can go downhill so
fast... faster than the just the lower number of vehicles alone would
imply.
Then there's the part about American arm vs the German arm of
DaimlerChrysler:
"Chrysler's slide from its position as one of the industry's most
profitable
companies has been marked by conspiracy theories and unsubstantiated
claims.
DaimlerChrysler's German executives typically are depicted as villains
spiriting Chrysler's assets to safe havens in Germany -- and even using
the
three-times-a-week DaimlerChrysler shuttle plane to do it."
Not a lot of truth to those theories according to this article. The
Chrysler
division did it all by themselves, for the most part.
