I put four Pioneers in my Dakota last year and haven't had any problems.
If you look at Crutchfield's listing of 6 3/4's, they are the most expensive
of the 2-way models. I think $150 for a pair. Right now (until I sort out
all of my options for installing a sub box and an amp) I'm just using a
Pioneer DEH-P7000R. I love it, but unfortunately they discontinued it and
all of the upper end models have been replaced with the damn knob volume
controls (instead of buttons).

Anyway, I would recommend the Pioneer 6 3/4's, even though you had bad luck
with them before. I know two other people who have the 6 1/2 version, and
they like them as well. Obviously they are somewhat delicate and you need
to be careful not to ruin them.

If you don't mind spending the extra money, JL Audio makes some very nice
speakers. The only downside is that they don't sell online and don't
authorize anyone to sell their products mail order. You've got to buy them
from a retail store. Usually that's only smaller shops, who charge you close
to full retail.
