This may seem too simple, but...

What type of inputs are you feeding it?? High level/line level??

You could be running a HPF (high pass filter) at the headunit that would
limit how low the sub plays. Some head units include this in their outputs
to protect the main speakers.

Do you have a test CD of any sort. If you don't I'd suggest picking one up
at Best Buy or some other CD place. "Bass mecanik" are good clean ones.
They're about $10 and have frequency sweeps and individual tones. It would
tell you if your sub is being filtered.

One other thing to try is to use a portible CD walkman dealie to feed your
amp. If your sub deepens up it will also mean your headunits output is
being filtered.
