That is not true. 4 ohm and 8 ohm speakers can be used together. As you said
the overall ohm value of the speaker system would be in the neighborhood of
6 ohms and most home amplifiers can safely drive a speaker system with that
ohm value. The biggest problem you will end up with is with the crossover
which was intended for the original driver.
