I would take it to a competent driveline shop, I had a similar problem and
after spending $400+, it ended up being a mis-aligned transmission. The rear
trans support on a 95 Dak allows for about 1-2" of side-to-side adjustment.

As for the jackstands at 55mph,
Sounds like a submission for the Darwin awards.
