Basically, it gets loose after about 4000+ miles of mixed on/off road. If
you let it go to 8000 miles it will become *very* easy to reproduce, even on
flat pavement. If you want to test for the "pop clunk" problem, all you have
to do is find an empty parking lot (or one with two cars parked together and
open around them is even better). When you find something like that, just
start making slow, sharp left turns around a two-space sized area - it needs
to be enough so you can bring the wheel back to center before you "sharp
left" again. You'll hear a low "pop", and you'll feel it in your feet
through floorboard. There may even be a little bit of "crunch" to the sound
(this is if you have a CRAPPY DEALER and it gets let go to about 8k/9k
miles). Believe me, it'll freak you out, it sounds and feels like the right
CV joint is lubricated with gravel. Also, the power steering will feel like
it's fighting the turn.
What the dealer has to do is tighten everything back up on the lower right
side. If that doesn't work, they have to order the replacement control arm.
It also can't hurt to make sure that the torsion bar is lined up correctly
while they're under there horsing around. Also, have 'em rotate and balance
the tires and do a front end alignment. Once my dealer did all that, the
problem went away and stayed away. OT: the recommendation on tire rotation
for our 4x4s is 4000 miles. It's my first 4x4, was surprised to learn that.
I like the new '00+ front suspension on the 4x4, mainly because
recirculating ball steering *sucks* (that's what kept me from buying 4x4 on
my '97), but it looks like the fronts on the '00+ 4x4 models aren't as tough
as MaMa Chrysler makes them out to be... hell, maybe I'm just rough on 'em.
