Rather than using a mechanical switch look at using a simple mercury switch
that can be mounted securely and be protected. May be inside the tailgate
where the latch opening is. This switch should be no more than a buck or
two. A mercury switch is a simple bulb with 2 contact inside of it. A blob
(don't know the technical term for it) of mercury floats inside of it.
Position the switch so that the blob will envelop the 2 contacts with the
tailgate in the desired position.

Thinking about this, Sounds like its for the Durango. Since many mini vans
have that kind of light. I'm working on putting on one my Dak. Have the dash
light installed and just have to run the wire to the gate and install the
switch somehow.

I've never found any wires or switches near my '99's tailgate.
Between
that light and the fuel door arrow, I think I'd go insane with an '01!
