Hey Bruce!
What you just described is the lower control arm in the front suspension
rubs the steering knuckle during a full turn (against the steering lock).
The popping noise is the metal-metal rubbing between the stamping and
casting. Go to the FAQ website http://www.dakota-truck.net/FAQ then go to
Chassis and the link regarding the crazy noises in a Gen III. I have some
pics of my '01 there that shows the problem.

I think I saw a TSB about this. Popping noise during parking lot
maneuvers/hard turns. I know Toyotas used to do this all the time. It
