BUZZ WATCH EXCLUSIVE
6.1 HEMI RESURRECTION
Back in the fall of 1999 when Car and Truck News originally broke the story
that Chrysler was working on an all new HEMI engine, I told you that there
where two versions in the works, A 5.7 liter and a 6.1 liter. Since then,
the 6.1, know internally as the 440 HEMI (though 6.1 liters does not equal
440cid), has been an on again off again project. At the beginning of this
year one of my Ace Buzz patrollers reported the brass at DC had pulled the
plug on the engine because it went against the companies engine reduction
plans.
The Buzz from Detroit is that the larger displacement HEMI is once again on
the production schedule. One of my Ace Buzz patrollers reports that the 6.1
will be showing up in Dodge truck and Jeep applications in 2005 or 2006.
Like the 5.7 it will feature a cast iron block and aluminum cylinder heads.
The new 5.7 liter HEMI that will be used in the Ram and other applications
beginning next year will be rated at an impressive 320 horsepower. That's
ten more ponies then the 8.0 liter Magnum V10! The Buzz is that the final
rating for the 6.1 liter will be around 350 ponies and that it will put out
a whooping 450 lb. ft of torque. In addition to being used in the Ram truck
expect to see the 6.1 show up in a special limited edition version of the
next generation Grand Cherokee (WK).
