If your 98 is the same as my 99 (I believe it is) it is simple. Your +
battery cable splits into 2 cables at the battery. 1 runs straight down and
goes to the starter. the other runs to the underhood fuse box beside the
battery. That is where you want to insert the amp meter. Your meter should
still be capable of at least 150 amps or more. My alternator is rated at
135 amps on my 99 R/T so you want at least 20% more than that in the amp
meter scale. I would not use wire any smaller than 8 ga and probably better
to use 6 but not absolutely necessary. Look at your truck and see if it is
not just like my 99. Jim in Waco.
