Then what does it consist of converting a 42RE to a 44re? Which has more
torque capacity and better gear ratios?

As far as I can tell, you may need a different torque converter for the
46RE,
one that is for the A518 with lockup as opposed to one for the A500 with
lockup.
Finding a flexplate which mates the 46RE to the 5.2L should not be too
difficult
because I believe pre-97 Jeep Cherokees used the 46RE with all the V8s.
You'll probably have to modify driveshaft length as well (shortened, I
think).
