  The only way we caught the bent valves was by a compression test.
Something just wasn't right so we did one and the compression was lousy. We
figured it was the valves and confirmed it by taking off the heads. Slack in
your chain shouldn't cause pinging, but ask Bernd ... he's a better mechanic
than I (I get my tips from him quite a bit)! Timing no matter how far off
will effect performance, but it depends on how extensive it is. If you're
only a slight bit off you won't even notice it, but if you're looking at a
few degrees you'll feel it quite a bit! Good luck!
