Transmission Question

In my '96 Dakota Sport 4X4 I have the 5-speed
tranny, the problem is that when she is cold I can't
get her into 2nd gear. Once the truck warms up there
is no problem. My Haynes manual says the tranny oil is
5W30 motor oil, is this the same spec as any of you
have heard? I know engine oil is commonly used in the
newer trannys, it just seems that since the transfer
case uses auto trans fluid, it would have made sense
to use the same in the tranny. Would it be wise to
drain the existing oil and add in semi- or full-
synthetic 5W30 engine oil to help with this problem?
Thanks for any help in this matter, jkp.
