Yes, I believe that is the shaft. I would expect some degree of play in
it, with the u-joint & telescoping section, but if it's worn, it'll be
excessive.

Tim knows someone who had the clunk and just removed the shaft and put it
back in, and it was silenced. If you're not under warranty, give that a
shot before looking for a replacement.
