My suggestion about the plugs was to see if there were any
tell-tale signs about what's going on in the combustion chambers.

Similarly, with the filter, in that a dirty filter will cause the motor
to run rich.

Two of the most common causes for sudden poor gas mileage
are faulty/failing oxygen sensor and plugged up cat converter.
Oxygen sensors begin to get "lazy" at 60,000 mi. and up.
Normally, if your cat converter is plugged (which could be caused
by a faulty oxygen sensor), you will experience other driveability
problems.
