Before you start performing these tests, check under your PDC for any
corroded wires. I believe that is a common problem found on many Daks.
Repair any wires, harnesses that you see are rotted or starting to rot.
This may fix your problem and you won't need to continue the rest of the
testing.
Test 1
A) Turn your ignition off
B) Remove the ASD relay from the PDC
C) Disconnect the PCM harness connectors
D) Measure the resistance of the ASD relay ctl circuit between the relay
connector and the PCM harness connector
E) Is the resistance below 5 ohms?
F) If the answer is NO repair the circuit, else, next test
Test 2
A) Remove the ASD relay from the PDC
B) Turn the ignition on
C) Measure the voltage of the fused ignition switch output circuit in the
ASD relay connector
D) Is the voltage above 10 volts?
E) If not, repair the fused ignition circuit or check your battery voltage,
else next test
Test 3
A) Turn the ignition off
B) Remove the ASD relay from the PDC
C) Disconnect the PCM harness connectors
D) Measure the resistance between ground and the ASD relay control circuit
E) Is the resistance below 5 ohms?
F) If yes, repair the ASD relay control circuit for a short to ground, else,
next test
Test 4
A) Turn the ignition off
B) Remove the ASD relay
C) Measure the resistance between ASD relay terminals 85 and 87
D) Measure the resistance between ASD relay terminals 85 and 30
E) Is the resistance below 1,000 ohms for either measurement?
F) If yes, replace the ASD relay, else, next test
Test 5
A) Turn the ignition off
B) Remove the ASD relay from the PDC
C) Measure the resistance between terminals 85 and 86 of the relay
D) Is the resistance between 50 and 80 ohms?
E) If not, replace the ASD relay, else, next......
NEXT: Replace PCM

Subject: Re: DML: Re: '97 Dak 2.5L Died? auto shutdown relay chatters?
Well,
When it died, it had been driven like 3 miles, ran fine... Died in a
intersection!
and when I checked it, the guages were all dead, and when i tried to pull
up a code all I got was the mileage flashing... and the fuel pump ran and
ran.. then I noticed the ticking under the hood, and found the auto shutdown
relay clicking away!
Battery is New, and has been no problem... it cranks no problem...
Will check the ground at CTM though...
Weird!
Still dead as a fart rite now though... I really HATE to tow it home, looks
Bad! especially since I had to pull it with my '87 Hyundai Excel!
Tony.
