Here's my guess, the loose battery disconnect looked like a high resistance
connection to the voltage regulator and, in order to maintain a positive
charge rate to the battery, it continued to ramp up the output voltage until
it hit the peg on the gauge. Tightening the connection and resetting the
system "probably" solved the problem.
