When I complained about excessive pinging the dealer made an engine
computer change based upon a Chrysler Service Bulletin that directs them to
make such when a customer makes this complaint, or at least that's what the
svs writer told me when I came back to get my truck. There were no calls or
approval requests made to me. The change definitely worked as the ping is
gone except for very hard pulls and that's fine with me. I don't notice an
appreciable change in performance and no change in mileage. They applied a
Daimler/Chrysler sticker to the cross body radiator frame describing the code
change they made.
So far as federally-mandated recalls are concerned, I know that on
previous vehicles upon bringing it in for service the computer to the
manufacturer is checked and if no dealer has shown that the recall has been
done they do it whether you ask for it or not.
Whatever was done in your case has left you with a significant drop in
mileage and I think you need to focus on that complaint and not be so
concerned over the fact that they took some unilateral action, albeit without
your prior approval, that has now resulted in this big increase in gas
consumption. It's possible they may have to return your engine computer to
its previous (original) setting in order to handle your complaint, and if
that becomes the outconme, I seem to hear you saying that would be fine with
you. You may have more luck just being a customer who complains about
vehicle performance than to go in and try to pre-diagnose things, make
demands, and in effect tell them how to do their job.
