Might be a vacuum leak. Have you been under the hood any lately?

Subject: DML: Stronge noise on new 2k2 SXT.

Yesterday I pulled up to a McDs and when I turned down the stereo and rolled
down the window I noticed a sound like an pulsing air compressor. At first
I thought it was coming from the drive-thru speaker, but then today I
started my truck and turned on the A/C to cool it down (Georgia Sun heats
things up pretty good). I heard the same sound again. It sounds like a
leaky air compressor but pulsing not steady. Then when I turned off the
A/C it sounds like a long steady air leak (no more pulsing)...I never
noticed this noise before and was driving with the window down and radio off
alot a few months ago. I only have about 5,200 miles on it.
Just wanted to know if any other Dakota owners have had this problem or is
this a normal sound after 5000 miles? None of the OEM dash gauges are
showing any
problems.
