Subject: Tensioner (timing chain fix)
Spread the Word; Tensioner for the "slack" in the factory timing chain for v6/v8 motors is a rip-off pure and simple. The factory chain rides on one row of teeth like a bicycle chain. This design and normal wear will lead to more slack than was present when the set was new. The tensioner is a Dodge fix that requires a pretty big investment of work and time including removing water pump and timing chain cover (and all the accessories using the bolts that hold them on). This is a cheap chain design. Instead of the tensioner I recommend installing the double roller chain set. This set has two rows of teeth on both gears. Naturally the chain has more strenth (because it has two rows for the teeth to grab)and will never stretch. Slack will be reduced to less than 0.25" with just this part ($35 mopar performance). Tensioner costs (or wastes..)$50. Factory specs even indicate end play with the tensioner installed is pretty large. refer to TSB The double roller will naturally be a bit louder but will outperfo
rm and outlast the factory design even with additional $50 part that requires the chain to be removed to install it. Remember this: after reassembly, refill oil, run engine, drain oil, change filter. Gasket and metallic particles from new seals and chain set will fall directly into oil pan during this job!!
