Heh, heh, heh... it doesn't mean just anyone who skis. It's sort of a
stereotype, but it seemed to be a big trend at the University of Utah when
I was there during the early 90's (don't know if it still is). Moab also
seems to be permanently full of them.
To sum up the stereotypical granola, it's someone who likes to hang out
listening to Grateful Dead music, wear tie dye or wool or fleece with
sandals (many bought their entire wardrobes at REI or Kirkhams Sporting
Goods), eat all-natural organic food products (hence "granola"), smoke
other all-natural weed products, ski, snowboard, mountain bike, rock
climb, camp out, kayak, etc. Many of them are opposed to internal
combustion as it harms Mother Earth. Others drive Subarus, for whatever
reason (I guess they buy in to the idea that they need an AWD station
wagon to get to the ski resort). Sort of our version of modern-day
hippies.
If you had a snowmobile, I doubt you'd qualify. A true granola would tell
that you should have been snow shoeing instead in order to live in peace
and harmony with Mother Nature's creatures.
Hopefully that gives you some idea. I also hope I don't sound like I'm
making fun of anyone who does this. Many of my best friends in college
were granolas and knew it.
