That is how a broken cat will act...will fade as it heats up

My rattle does not seem to vary its sound with changing engine RPM.
Also,
seems to fade with rising engine temp, so only after 5-10 minutes of
operation.

I think I have the same thing as you are describing. Mine is definitely
not
the cat! it is the motor or an accessory. mine lasts for about +/-5
seconds. it starts immediately after the cold start and then speeds up
with
the idle and the slows down and then goes away. I am thinking its in
the
valve train but have yet looked into it. is this what you are
describing?

I am experiencing an intermittent "rattling" noise when I first start my
Dak
on cold mornings. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine
compartment, on the passenger side. I can't tell if it is coming from
an
accessory or the motor itself. The noise is somewhat subtle, and
subsides
with rising outside temps or when the engine warms up - although it can
still be detected. It is most prominent when started cold on a cold
morning. I can find nothing "loose" that would cause this noise.

I'm inclined to think it is not the valve train as the rattle "varies"
at a
steady RPM. I did have my lower intake manifold gasket replaced
recently,
which I believe involves complete and partial removal of the upper
accessories. Perhaps they didn't put things back together quite right.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Jon
