My 95 & 94 are both the Chrysler 2.5L ( based off the 2.2) I haven't seen
which the 96 used yet; but I'm thinking the AMC motor didn't get used until
the Gen III's. The 2.5L with a turbo can easily handle being 200HP all day
long.. and with the proper setup can go to 300-350 and still be a dependable
driver. I've read several articles on how to make it handle 26psi of boost
for daily driver use.
BUT.. The AMC 2.5.. was always more of a little torque motor.. So I
don't think it would respond as well. I'd say to look for a totaled Ram or
Dak with a 4.7L drivetrain in it.. or Cummins does make a 4cyl version of
the Diesel in the Ram.. It's the 3.9 ISB.
My turn to throw in my $.02
