Coolant smell, then nothing...
You've probably got a small leak in your gasket. The pressure under the
closed t-stat is enough to blow a little coolant thru a small gap. The
t-stat opens...& voila! - pressure is released & the coolant goes on it's
merry way thru it's designated course. I bet you'll find some evidence at
the base of the upper radiator hose.
