Temperature Problem

Hi,

New to the list and just hoping someone might have an idea about this.

'88 Dakota, V6, 3.9L, auto, 2WD. While driving at highway speeds, the temperature
fluctuates quite noticeably. I don't have any measurements in degrees since my gauge is
only a L/H with a needle somewhere in the middle. But, the optimal temp in the past has
always been just a bit past 1/3 of the way from Low to High on the gauge. Now, while
driving at 55-65, it will sit at optimal for a while, then climb to a bit past the halfway
mark on the gauge, sit there for a while, and then fall back down. These temp changes do
not seem to be related to anything like uphill/downill driving or anything like that. I
don't tow anything. Just drive back and forth from work basically. 20 minute drive,
mainly 60mph. Coolant levels all seem to be in order. Drive belts are all tight. Are we
looking at a bad thermostat here? Don't they usually either stick open or closed?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh Moran
