That's your engine to body ground alright, it can connect just about
anywhere on the block that provides a good ground and allows adequate slack
for engine movement. Look for a bolt of the right size on the intake
manifold somewhere. Without a good ground, your temp sender could be very
inconsistent as could MANY other things.

Hook it up and see if that doesn't make things work better.
