He set the starting bid at $8,800 because that's the absolute minimum he'll
take for it.
Then that is his "reserve". You said it yourself, he'll take no less than
that.
Now do you understand? He did away with playing the reserve game and will
sell it to anyone who comes up with the starting bid amount. If anyone is
smart, they won't bid until the last second. Why raise the price?
