No, they are NOT the same thing, otherwise, why does EBAY have both options??? If he had a real reserve price, then the starting bid would be $8,800 with a $10,000 reserve. If he set the reserve at $10,000, and the highest bid is only 9,500, he can still sell it to the highest bidder, or not sell it. But if he was to put the starting bid at $10,000, he wouldn't get any bids and wouldn't be able to sell it at the $9,500 because he had no bidders. He set the starting bid at $8,800 because that's the absolute minimum he'll take for it. If he would take less, but wanted $8,800 for it, he would have set the starting bid at $6000 with the reserve at $8,800. That way, he can sell it at $7,500 if that's the highest bid, but he's not willing to take that low of an offer, so starting is $8,800. Do you understand now?
