Tim,
I just sent you an email with some tips on replacing the timing chain. I
would go ahead and get a new tensioner if I were you. It's funny that
you've got chain noise at 56K if you currently have the tensioner. Makes me
wonder if you have one at all. The life of the chain is about 40K give or
take without the tensioner. I could see one lasting til 56K without the
tensioner, but I would think that one WITH the tensioner would last longer
than that. Does that make any sense? Either way, I would go ahead and pick
up a new tensioner.
And about the crank bolt....don't worry. You won't strip the crank bolt.
Only idiots that don't think about what their doing do that. (Yes that
idiot was me). I've explained the simple way to avoid this error in my
earlier email.

Subject: DML: Timing Chain replacement help?
Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 14:16:33 -0400
I have developed a rather loud motor over the past 6 months and am hoping
that it's just the timing chain (56K on the motor). So as soon as I get back
from vacation (next week) I plan on replacing it myself...since I don't have
a job to come back too...Which double chain do you recommend, MP or Hughes?
Do I need a new tensioner, archives were kind of confusing about some
retro-fit working and not working with the double chain on the V6. Can
someone tell me all the parts I will need to do a complete job as well as
tools I will need. Also, does anyone have a good how-to written up on how to
do this. I was reading in the archive and saw some problems with the crank
bolt being stripped. Can anyone give me some tips to avoid this.
