well, that didn't take long... I'd say clean it up with some brass
wool (steel wool will leave raw steel behind, but I suppose since these
rims are plated steel it doesn't make much difference...) and then you
could try spraying them with some rust inhibiting clear paint. I've
got some from Permatex called Extend that has seemed to work pretty
well for me. and it does stay quite clear on non-steel surfaces.

sounds pretty strange. would be nice to see the pictures to see what
