Dale, I went to the archives to reread your original post from last month.
It looks like the rear end suffered considerable abuse by the previous
owner. The damage you have discovered points toward either a gear set that
was improperly heat treated to begin with, or has been thoroughly thrashed.
At this point you might not be certain of the condition of the axles,
particularly the area where the spline machining ends. The entire axle and
differential housing may not be true and square end-to-end.
You mentioned last month about replacing the entire rear end. This is
beginning to look like a better solution unless you are confident that there
is no warping or other damage to the case or to the axles. At the very least
I would replace the differential internals completely. Now would be a good
time to upgrade to one of the limited slip or "locker" type units as well as
new ring and pinion gears and bearings.
